Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is available for neonates, children and adults. A sophisticated heart and lung bypass machine assumes the patient’s heart and lung functions allowing these organs to heal during some critical illnesses. ECMO is used to treat adult patients with severe respiratory and/or cardiac failure who do not respond to conventional methods. Venovenous (VV) as well as venoarterial (VA) ECMO are available to support patients in their recovery from a variety of causes of respiratory
failure. Patients should be referred within 72 hours of respiratory failure.
