Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing is used to evaluate the level of exercise tolerance in patients with lung and heart diseases. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing is considered an ideal modality for assessing the cardiovascular system as a whole and its individual components.

The recognition of abnormal response patterns of ventilatory, cardiac and metabolic limitation to exercise may help in diagnostic evaluation. Traditional 12-lead EKG stress testing is coupled with breath-by-breath measurements of gas exchange and respiratory response. The integration of these measurements can clarify etiology.

Indications for cardiopulmonary testing include:

  • Evaluation of dyspnea
  • Functional status determination in congestive heart failure
  • Preoperative risk assessment
  • Response to therapeutic interventions
