Livingston, NJ — To celebrate the importance of occupational therapists and assistants and the services they provide, April is designated as Occupational Therapy Month.
Occupational therapy enables people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health and prevent—or live better with—injury, illness or disability. It is an evidence-based practice, meaning that the plan designed for each individual is supported by data, experience and “best practices” that have been developed and proven over time.
Occupational therapists and assistants at the Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Center (CORC) at the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center in Livingston, NJ, help patients achieve their maximum level of functioning for activities in which the patients want or need to participate.
“Independence is a main objective for our patients; we want to help them maintain it or rebuild it, if necessary,” said Carole Andreou OT, CHT, CORC Director. “After taking into account the needs of our patients, we provide a holistic approach to therapy to get them re-acclimated to their normal activities.”
When working with a therapist, strategies and modifications are customized for each individual to resolve problems, improve function and support everyday living activities. Through these therapeutic approaches, occupational therapy helps individuals design their lives, develop needed skills, adjust their environments (e.g. home, school or work) and build health-promoting habits and routines that will allow them to thrive.
Services at the Center include: a work simulator that replicates tasks performed at work and home; computer activities for strength and movement; lymphedema therapy, and customized splinting.
Pediatric Occupational Therapy is available at the Atkins Kent Building across from the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. Our Pediatric physical and occupational therapy services include: sensory Integration therapy; neurodevelopmental therapy; orthopedic and musculo-skeletal therapy; therapeutic listening; handwriting programs. Conditions that are treated include: ADD, PDD or ADHD; Autism; Cerebal Palsy; Developmental Delays; Down Syndrome; Genetic Conditions; Hypotonia/Hypertonia; neurological conditions; orthopedic conditions; Plagiocephaly; post-operative surgery conditions; Sensory Integration Dysfunction; Tortocolis.
