Vascular disease is the nation’s number one killer and can
be the cause of stroke, aneurysm, disability and amputation. Most
Americans are aware of the consequences of blocked blood vessels in
their heart, yet the potential risks of blockages in blood vessels
in other parts of the body often go unnoticed.
To raise awareness about this dangerous condition, adults are invited
to a free 15-minute screening for vascular disease on Saturday, May
2, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center,
200 South Orange Avenue, Livingston. The screening includes ultrasound
examination for aortic aneurysms and carotid artery disease as well
as a test that measures blood flow in the legs.
These non-invasive tests are a painless way to determine if any narrowing
or blockages exist in arteries. The carotid arteries are the main
blood vessels to the brain. The aorta is the largest blood vessel
in the chest and abdomen.
Many people with vascular disease do not have symptoms. Therefore,
those at high-risk for the condition should be
screened:
- Over
age 55
- High
blood pressure
- Lack
of exercise
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- High
cholesterol
- Obesity
- Family
history of vascular disease
- Previous
heart or leg treatments
Registration is required for this free
screening. Please call 1-888-724-7123 to sign up for a 15-minute time
slot.
