The
Child Life staff promotes and maintains children’s essential
developmental, cognitive, and social, emotional skills while the
face the trauma of serious illness and its treatment. The
goal is to enhance the child’s well being and provide family
centered care.
Certified
Child Life Specialists (CCLS) are professional who are specially
trained to help children and their families understand and manage
the hospital experience. Certified Child Life Specialists
strive to minimize the stress and anxiety that often accompanies
a hospital stay and medical procedures. Child Life Specialists
are skilled in providing developmental, education, and therapeutic
interventions for hospitalized children and their families. Child
Life Specialists support growth and development while recognizing
family and individual strengths and respect different methods of
coping.
The
Child Life internship is a concentrated, full-time placement which
provides student with a practical, intensive experience, while
developing professional skills in the field of Child Life. It
includes exposure and experience with all ages of hospitalized
children and to the multiple interventions a Child Life Specialist
provides. The minimal requirement of hours to be completed
during the courses of ones internship is 500 hours.
Acceptance Criteria
- Completed core courses within an accredited institution
- 100 hours volunteer hospital experience
- Complete application requirements
- Interview with Child Life Staff and Child Life Program Director
We will be providing internships throughout Fall and
Winter Semesters. Applications must be submitted by the following
dates :
- Winter Semester – September
5th
- Fall Semester – May 5th
- Must be supervised by a Certified Child Life Specialist
- Able to organize and conduct activities for all ages both one
to one and groups
- Help assess patient needs and develop care plans based on information
gained through observation, medical charts, the multidisciplinary
health care team, the patient/family and the Child Life Staff
- Assist in preparing patients and families for various procedures
- Enhance pediatric patient’s coping techniques
and provide distraction
- Work with families to help them cope with their children’s
hospitalization
- Be responsible for assuring safety and participating in playroom
activities
- Observe patient behavior and report observation at interdisciplinary
rounds, through private discussions with health care team and
charting
- Adhere to all infection control and Child Life Department policies
- Gain a basic knowledge of the administrative aspects of a Child
Life Program
- Develop the professional skills and competencies necessary
to become a Child Life Specialist
- Evaluate oneself under the guidance of an experienced professional,
and begin to be evaluated by professional standards
- Begin the transition from student to professional
