Having a concussion base-line study for your young athlete can help identify issues in the
future. Our Emergency Department will have that study on hand should he/she suffer a
concussion while playing any sport.
We offer ImPACT Concussion Screening for student-athletes between the ages of 13-18
years old. ImPACT is being used for concussion management services by more than 1,000 high
schools, colleges, sports medicine centers and professional teams throughout the world. This
non-invasive test is set up in an interactive web-based format and takes about 25-35 minutes
to complete. It tracks information such as memory, reaction time, speed and concentration.
This important screening program will assist your physician in evaluating and treating a head
injury in the future.
If an athlete is believed to have suffered a head injury, this screening test may be used to
evaluate the severity of the head injury against the baseline results. The test data may be used
to determine when return-to-play is appropriate and safe for the injured athlete.
ImPACT follow-up evaluation is available through the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center
Emergency Department. If a concussion is suspected and the athlete is in the Emergency
Department, be sure to alert the Emergency Department staff to retrieve the baseline test.
If an athlete sustains an injury to his/her head, he/she will be required to take the post-test.
The post-test can be administered in the NBIMC Emergency Department. Or, if the injury
does not require a visit to the Emergency Department, a post-test can be administered.
