Newark, NJ -- Four Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and
Children’s Hospital of New Jersey (CHNJ) team members were
honored on July 20, 2009 by The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey
(HINJ) at its annual “2009 Humanism in Healthcare” award
ceremony. The event recognizes hospital and long-term care employees
in direct patient care positions who have shown compassion, empathy,
respect and cultural sensitivity in the delivery of care to patients
and families.
“We are very proud of the recognition these outstanding
individuals have received,” says John A. Brennan, MD, executive
director of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. “Their efforts
greatly enhance patient care and patient satisfaction, and contribute
to strength of the entire medical team.”
Thirty-eight individuals from 18 area public hospitals, federally
qualified health centers, long-term care institutions, and nursing
schools in the Essex/Union/Morris region received certificates
and awards of $500 each from the HFNJ. They were recognized for
extraordinary demonstration of caring and compassion in their work.
Newark’s mayor, the Hon. Cory A. Booker, served as the event’s
special keynote speaker, and John A. Brennan, M.D., delivered the
keynote address.
Damien is a unique individual who cares about the patients of
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. His critical position is transporting
patients. The success of this position is dependent on individuals "thinking
out of the box." Each minute is critical for a patient and the
encounter must be exchanged with care and compassion.
Pat is a role model in the war against infectious disease. She
has been recognized throughout the various Infection Prevention
Collaboratives around the country. In her position, Pat has
created a multi-disciplinary team to address issues related to
preventing illness in patient populations and to give the Newark
Beth Israel staff the tools to help them stay healthy. Pat identifies
opportunities for the team to improve care to patients and their
families.
Maryellen is charged with examining patient satisfaction data
and designing systems/processes to improve patient outcomes. She
researched the medical literature, and reviewed articles that highlighted
the success of bedside nursing rounds as a way to enhance staff/patient
/family communication. Ms. Wiggins shared her information with
the nursing staff who immediately embraced the concepts, resulting
in increased patient satisfaction scores.
Dr. Kamalakar has dedicated his medical life to caring for children
with cancer and blood disorders as Medical Director of The Valerie
Fund Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. He
has been an advocate for children and their families and is always
on call, 24 hours a day. Special people work in heartbreaking specialties
and it is difficult to toil in a field where the life and
death of children is involved, and Dr. Kamalakar works with expert
skill, grace and sensitivity to all.
