Evidence Based Medicine

What is evidence-based medicine?

Integrating the finest, latest research evidence available with clinical expertise and patient values. There is a hierarchy of evidence. Some types of evidence are better than others. There are four steps in the EBM process:

1. Formulating the question
2. Information search
3. Review of information and critical appraisal
4. Using the results in clinical practice—integrating the evidence with patient factors
5. Evaluation of the whole process for improvement

In formulating the clinical questions, the “PICO” approach is often used: defining the patient, intervention, comparator and outcome.
