Belleville, NJ – International competitive cyclist Michael Lyach will lead the race for Prostate Cancer Screening and Education in the Clara Maass Medical Center Foundation LIFELINE CHALLENGE cycling event on Sunday, September 21, 2008, at Branch Brook Park in Belleville.
Lyach has raced all over the world, and, if the terrains from Eastern Europe to South America could not hold him back, neither could prostate cancer. With the help of the Cancer Center at Clara Maass Medical Center, he won the toughest battle of his life and is determined to support Clara Maass Medical Center's efforts to help other men beat it.
His passion for cycling also helped in his fight. “The thing that keeps me going is the motivation to get back on that bike,” said Lyach. “It's my lifeline.”
The LIFELINE CHALLENGE will take place during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and consist of events from pro races to recreational rides. All events encompass everyone from elite riders and corporate teams to survivors and families.
“The fight against prostate cancer is all about education, screening and early detection," said Jane Newman Kessler, vice president of Clara Maass Medical Center Foundation. “We are so grateful to Mike Lyach for bringing us the idea for a cycling event to raise both awareness and funds. As a world-class athlete, he demonstrates that this disease can be successfully beaten if men will just take that first important step.”
Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America, affecting one in six men. This year, doctors will diagnose more than 230,000 new cases and more than 30,000 men will die from it. Prostate cancer has a cure rate of 90 percent when treated early; however, many men are not screened and many ignore symptoms until it is too late.
That is why The Cancer Center at Clara Maass Medical Center, in conjunction with the Medical Center's Community Health Department, reaches out to men in the community. Cancer education and outreach takes place at middle and high school football games; community health fairs; senior residences; and grocery and retail stores.
To help create awareness and generate prostate screening and education funds, participate in the LIFELINE CHALLENGE. For more information, or to register your team, visit www.claramaassfoundation.org, or call 973-450-2277.
