Belleville, NJ – Sleep disorders affect millions of Americans and often go unrecognized by both patients and medical professionals.
The Center for Sleep Disorders at Clara Maass Medical Center can help identify the underlying conditions causing the disorders and offer treatments to address them. Accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the Center will identify the presence of a sleep disorder using a series of non-invasive tests that monitor brain, heart, respiratory and muscle activity during sleep. After testing, a Board-certified physician will review the results and recommend a customized treatment program.
Nail Fatah, M.D., director of The Center for Sleep Disorders at Clara Maass Medical Center, leads the team of health care professionals as a pulmonary specialist, Board-certified in Sleep Medicine. “Ignoring a sleep disorder can seriously compromise a person’s health,” said Dr. Fatah. “Without a good night’s sleep, people are physically and mentally impairing themselves. They do not perform as well at school or work, and are more prone to injury while working and driving.”
Sleep disorders include insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, sleepwalking and excessive daytime sleepiness. Symptoms can include excessive daytime sleepiness, involuntary dozing, difficulty falling or staying asleep, kicking of the legs during sleep, decreased memory or concentration, depression and unusually loud snoring.
Since sleep-related breathing disorders are associated with an increased risk of hypertension, cardiac disease and stroke; it is important to get a diagnosis as soon as possible so that treatment may begin.
