BELLEVILLE, NJ - As the weather heats up, heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke become risks. These illnesses occur when a person’s body reaches an alarmingly high temperture and is unable to properly cool itself. Heat-related illnesses can be life-threatening so those showing symptoms should seek proper treatment immediately.
Signs of heat-related illness may include: weakness, headache, dizziness, muscle weakness or cramps, nausea, vomiting, feeling worried, fast heartbeat, and/or dehydration.
“Heat-related illnesses are preventable,” said John Fontanetta, MD, Chairman of the Clara Maass Medical Center Emergency Department. “When temperatures are high, try to stay indoors in air-conditioned areas. However, if you must go outdoors in hot weather, be sure to keep hydrated, stay in the shade when possible and avoid exerting yourself. Anyone showing symptoms of heat stroke should seek immediate medical attention.”
Some tips to prevent heat-related illnesses include: Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes; wear a hat or use an umbrella to protect yourself from the sun; always use sunscreen; stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water; try to avoid beverages that contain caffeine or alcohol, which may cause dehydration; and do outdoor activities such as gardening or exercise at cooler times of the day, either early morning or in the evening.
“Heat related illness can occur at any age but the elderly are most at risk. Taking precautions in the heat can be life saving.” added Dr. Fontanetta.
