Belleville, NJ – Prostate cancer
affects one in six men in the United States. This year, doctors
will diagnose more than 230,000 new cases and more than 30,000
men will die from it. Prostate cancer has a cure rate of 90 percent
when treated early; however, many men are not screened and many
ignore symptoms until it is too late.
In support of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Clara Maass Medical
Center will hold the second annual LIFELINE CHALLENGE: A Walk & Ride
to Fight Prostate Cancer, on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at Branch
Brook Park in Newark.
The Walk & Ride to Fight Prostate cancer will once again be
led by international competitive cyclist and prostate cancer survivor
Michael Lyach. Lyach has raced all over the world from Eastern
Europe to South America, and with the help of the Cancer Center
at Clara Maass Medical Center, he won the toughest battle of his
life. Now, he is determined to support Clara Maass Medical Center’s
efforts to help raise awareness about prostate cancer and the importance
of screenings.
The LIFELINE CHALLENGE will consist of two or three-mile walks,
as well as a five, 10 or 15-mile fun ride. Everyone from corporate
teams to survivors and families are welcome to participate. Special
guest WABC-TV Eyewitness News this Morning and
Eyewitness News at Noon co-anchor,
Ken Rosato will MC the event.
“Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in this
country,” said Jane Newman Kessler, CFRE, vice president
of Clara Maass Medical Center Foundation. “Education and
screenings are very important because they can lead to early detection.
That is why the Cancer Center at Clara Maass Medical Center, in
conjunction with the Medical Center's Community Health Department,
reaches out to men in the community offering free screenings.”
To help create awareness, join the LIFELINE CHALLENGE. To register,
