Belleville, NJ—Kathleen Ruddy, MD, a breast surgeon at Clara Maass Medical Center has written a book entitled, The Pink Virus of Mice and Women and Breast Cancer, which was released this past October.
Published by Lulu Publishing, this book discusses a virus—known as the mouse mammary tumor virus—that is known to cause breast cancer in mice and could be related to a similar breast cancer virus in women. The book catalogs over 70 years of research regarding this virus and provides a compelling argument that we must answer the question, once and for all, "Does a virus cause breast cancer in women. And, if so, what are we going to do about it and when?"
“Research on this topic has been going on since 1936, but still there is no solution for the problem,” said Dr. Ruddy. “This is my opportunity to explain what I have learned to create awareness and generate public opinion in favor of doing more research, more quickly about this virus.”
The book was written for all women, but is also a valuable resource for medical researchers with its extensive bibliography.
Dr. Ruddy is founder and president of the Breast Health and Healing Foundation, headquartered at Clara Maass Medical Center. The mission of the Foundation is “to discover the specific causes of breast cancer and to use that knowledge to prevent the disease.” One-hundred percent of book sales will go to the Foundation.
In 2006, the royal family of Kuwait invited her to build an integrated breast service in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Kuwait Cancer Center. There, she also worked as a consultant surgeon for the Royale Hayat Hospital.
Dr. Ruddy earned her bachelor’s degree at George Washington University and her international master’s degree in health leadership from McGill University (Montreal, Canada). She received her doctorate from New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Ruddy completed her internship and residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ, where she also served as Chief Resident of General Surgery. She was a Fellow of Breast Service at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
