CLARA MAASS MEDICAL CENTER TO BECOME A SMOKE-FREE CAMPUS CELEBRATING THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT

Belleville, NJ – To mark this year’s 33rd anniversary of the Great American Smokeout, Clara Maass Medical Center (CMMC) and all other northern hospitals, health facilities and offices of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System will become smoke-free campus wide on November 19, 2009.

The Great American Smokeout is a program created by the American Cancer Society to encourage Americans to quit smoking for this one day in hope that they will realize that if they can quit for one day, they can quit forever.

The Great American Smokeout will be the culmination of CMMC’s year-long efforts to provide smoking cessation resources for its employees and patients. These include initiatives such as quit programs, giveaways and providing a constant stream of information.

The other northern campuses that will become smoke-free include Livingston Services, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center, Saint Barnabas Corporate Center, Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center, Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Saint Barnabas Nursing and Rehabilitation Centers, Saint Barnabas Outpatient Centers and all Saint Barnabas Health Care System facilities and property in northern New Jersey.

This smoke-free initiative will mean that smoking is prohibited both indoors and outdoors on all properties owned and operated by the CMMC, including parking areas. Therefore, an important component of the smoke-free campus initiative is helping employees, patients and family members quit the habit for good.

Tobacco treatment through the Saint Barnabas’ Institute for Prevention Tobacco Dependence Treatment Program is available to both employees and the public. The program consists of individual tobacco assessments for every participant. After the assessment, participants work with a Tobacco Treatment Specialist to create a treatment plan best suited to that individual’s needs.
