Belleville, NJ— The Office on Women’s Health, a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services, is celebrating the kickoff of its 10th annual National Women’s Health Week on May 10, 2009 and will celebrate until May 16.
A nationwide initiative, National Women’s Health Week works to encourage women to make their health a top priority. This year’s theme is “It’s Your Time,” and promotes simple steps that women can take in order to live a happy and healthy life. During this week, communities, businesses, government, health organizations and other groups work together to educate women about how they can improve their physical and mental health and lower their risks of certain diseases.
“Women often neglect their health, and instead focus on the health of others in their lives,” said Annette Cozzarelli, MD, Medical Director of the Women’s Health Center at Clara Maass Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System. “This week is a perfect opportunity to encourage women to start taking care of themselves more and focus on their own health first.”
According to the Office on Women’s Health, some important steps to take for a healthier life include:
- Getting at least 2 ½ hours of moderate physical activity, 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous physical activity, or a combination of both each week
- Eating a nutritious diet.
- Visiting a health care professional for regular checkups and preventive screenings.
- Avoiding risky behaviors, like smoking and not wearing a seatbelt.
- Paying attention to mental health, including getting enough sleep and managing stress.
