Belleville, NJ—Clara Maass Medical Center, a Barnabas Health facility, wishes to promote the importance of a healthy heart this American Heart Month, February.
Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. and is a major cause of disability. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease, or cardiovascular disease, encompasses a variety of problems related to plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries. As the plaque builds up, the arteries narrow, making it more difficult for blood to flow and creating a risk for heart attack or stroke. Further, heart attacks can be sudden, but start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people do not realize what is happening and wait too long to get help. Therefore, it is important to get regular blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, in addition to getting enough exercise and maintaining a healthy diet.
