TOMS RIVER, New Jersey, September 24, 2007--- Community Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System, offers a variety of free monthly support groups and educational programs for area residents through its Center for Kids and Family.
The center is designed to respond to the complex physical, social, psychological and emotional needs of today’s families. Nurses, social workers and educators from the Center provide a variety of services, programs and educational opportunities that support children, strengthen families and enhance quality of life in our community. Following is a look at some of the programs for children slated for this fall:
Tolerance (Ages 12 and older)
Specially designed vignettes will challenge students to look at basic tools of empathy, respect, acceptance and forgiveness. Free.
Thursday, October 18, 6 to 7 p.m.
Good Choices & Decision Making (Girls Ages 12 to 14)
A program designed for adolescent girls to discuss choices, decision making, consequences, responsibility, and abstinence. Girls are encouraged to come join this session facilitated by nurse educator in a relaxed environment. This workshop will give you the information you need to make good decisions for yourself today and in the future. PARENTS: Please note there may be frank discussion regarding sexual issues and sexual responsibility. Fee: $10.
Monday, October 22 or December 10, 4:30 to 6 p.m.
Expressing Anger: Unhealthy vs. Healthy (Ages 11 to 13)
Help children identify inappropriate anger behaviors and feelings and learn new ways to handle anger constructively. Free
Friday, November 2, 6 to 7 p.m.
Bully-Proofing (Ages 10 to 12)
If you’ve been bullied or teased, then you know how much it hurts to be the victim of bullying and teasing. Maybe you’ve bullied someone else; if you have, it’s time to stop. Maybe you’ve watched someone else be bullied or teased — you might have felt bad but have been afraid to speak up. Maybe you’ve been in all three situation — lots of people have. No matter were you fit when it comes to bullying and teasing, this workshop is for you. People who bully and tease are not bad people. It is their behavior that is bad. It’s never too late to make a change. Stop the bullying right now! Start showing all people respect Free.
