Center for Kids and Family at Community Medical Center Offers Programs for Parents and Children

TOMS RIVER, NJ, JANUARY 21, 2009 – The Center for Kids & Family at Community Medical Center is committed to responding to the growing physical, social, psychological and emotional needs of today’s family. The Center strives to assist families in meeting the varies and sometimes staggering challenges they face daily.

The Center for Kids & Family offers a wide array of programs for parents and children. Pre-registration for all programs is required by calling 1-888-724-7123.

Programs offered during the month of February include:

Cyberbullying
Tuesday, February 3
6 p.m.
The Center for Kids & Family, 591 Lakehurst Road, Toms River

Bullying these days is not what it once was. What used to be confined to the schoolyard and the lunchroom is now expanded to cyberspace, often with devastating consequences. Cyberbullying is the use of interactive digital technologies, like cell phones and the Internet, to hurt, embarrass, threaten or otherwise harm someone else. It is important for parents to learn about cyberbullying, as well as how to protect their children from it.

 

Talking About Touching (K-3rd Grade)
Saturday, February 7
9:30 a.m.

This program teaches children basic safety rules which include traffic safety, fire safety and gun safety, and will emphasize the positive aspects of touch in children’s everyday lives. The overall focus of the program is prevention of child sexual abuse.

 

Kids & Divorce Support Group
Saturday, February 14
9:30 a.m.

Separation and divorce are difficult times for the whole family. This professionally-facilitated support group is designed for children ages 7 – 12 who have experienced a separation or divorce in their family.

 

Bereavement Support for Children
Saturday, February 14
11 a.m.
The Center for Kids & Family, 591 Lakehurst Road, Toms River

This professionally-facilitated support group is for children ages 7 – 14 who have lost a parent, grandparent, sibling or friend.

 

Why Follow the Crowd (Ages 11-13)
Thursday, February 19
5:30 p.m.
The Center for Kids & Family, 591 Lakehurst Road, Toms River

This program teaches children to respect themselves, their values, and their right to make their own choices. Participants will learn the tools to help resist peer pressure. Fee is $5 per participant.

 

It’s a Girl Thing (Ages 8 – 13)
Friday, February 20
6 p.m.
The Center for Kids & Family, 591 Lakehurst Road, Toms River

The program, led by a registered nurse, discusses the numerous changes that accompany puberty in a comfortable and non-threatening environment. This program is appropriate for girls between the ages of 8 and 13 and their mothers or guardians. Fee is $15 per child, parents are free.

 

Stress Management (Ages 8 – 11)
Thursday, February 26
5:30 p.m.
The Center for Kids & Family, 591 Lakehurst Road, Toms River

Stress is a normal part of life. Learning how to handle it can make life easier – especially for children. The program will offer tips and suggestions on how to eliminate daily stressors that can occur at home and school.
