TOMS RIVER, NJ, FEBRUARY, 24, 2009 – The Lighthouse at Community
Medical Center offers a variety of health and wellness programs
each month designed to keep older adults and their loved ones informed
and educated on a variety of health topics and conditions. Programs
are free unless otherwise noted, and pre-registration is required

Upcoming March programs include:
- Foot pain is a common, but not necessary part of aging. Disease,
years of wear and tear, ill-fitting or poorly designed shoes,
poor circulation or improperly trimmed toenails can cause many
foot complications. On Monday, March 2, podiatrist Gerald Mauriello,
DPM, will present, “Ask the Podiatrist” at 2 p.m.
at the Lighthouse, 591 Lakehurst Road. Dr. Mauriello will also
offer free food screenings to all participants. The program and

- On Thursday, March 5, Tony Athwal, MD, a specialist in medical
and surgical care of the eyes, will present, “Vision Correction:
Your Options,” at 2 p.m. Dr. Athwal will offer information
on the latest eye care and vision correction that enables patients
to reduce their dependency on glasses or contact lenses. The
program is free and will be held at the Lighthouse, 591 Lakehurst

- On Monday, March 9, the program “Conservative Treatment
for Arthritis of the Hip and Knee” will be presented at
1 p.m. at the Lighthouse, 591 Lakehurst Road. The program will
cover the commonly used treatments for arthritis before elective
surgery. The program is free, but pre-registration is required
by calling 1-888-724-7123.
- Community Medical Center will present an AARP Driver’s
Safety Program on Thursday, March 19 and 26 from 9 a.m. to 1
p.m. This course, designed for motorists age 50 and older, is
intended to help drivers improve their skills while teaching
them to avoid accidents and traffic violations. The program takes
into consideration the physical changes of the maturing driver
and identifies ways to compensate for these changes. The eight-hour
course is taught in two four-hour sessions spanning two days.
There are no tests. The fee is $10, payable by check only to

- On Thursday, March 19, participants may come to the Lighthouse,
591 Lakehurst Road to “Review Your Meds,” a free
program to meet one-on-one with a registered pharmacist to review
current medications. Participants are asked to bring all medications

- As our population grows older, concerns about bone health are
becoming serious health issues. Osteoporosis has been known to
be called the “Aging Disease,” but research suggests
that prevention is the key to this silent epidemic. To help older
adults learn about individual risk factors, practical tips on
effective strategies to promote bone health and prevent falls,
Community Medical Center will offer its HEALTH EASE Workshop
called “Bone Up On Your Health” on Thursday, March
26 from 2 – 3:30 p.m. at the Lighthouse, 591 Lakehurst
Road. Participants will also learn about treatment interventions
and recommendations to improve quality of life through healthier
lifestyle behaviors. The program is free, but pre-registration

- Voluntary Income Tax Assistance is available at the Lighthouse
in Toms River. Older adults who need assistance completing a
simple federal or state tax return can schedule an appointment
with a volunteer counselor. Appointments are required and offered
