New Jersey -- Learn to see the world through the eyes of our four-footed friends during an evening with Dr. Alexandra Horowitz, author of Inside of a Dog (Scribner 2009) – a scientifically-based guide to understanding your dog’s behavior.  The presentation and book signing, which is being hosted by the Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care CeInside of a Dog nter, will be held on Wednesday, May 19, at 7:00 p.m. in the Islami Auditorium at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, located at 94 Old Short Hills Road in Livingston. Proceeds will benefit Paws for Patients, a hospice canine therapy program funded solely by donor support.

Paws for Patients was launched in 2009 by the Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center to further enhance its mission of caring for patients not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. “The therapeutic use of dogs in the health care setting has been proven to help orient patients, especially those with dementia, to the present moment,” explains Lorraine Sciara, RN, FAHCE, Executive Director of the Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center.  “Dogs decrease anxiety, reduce feelings of isolation and event lower blood pressure in patients.”

Admission to the May 19 program is $20. Seating is limited. To register, please call 973-322-4792 or email supporthospice@barnabashealth.org.

Dog owners interested in volunteering with their dogs in the Paws for Patients program  should call Spiro Ballas at 973-322-4866 or email sballas@barnabashealth.org.  To make a donation to the Paws for Patients program, please call 973-322-4863.
