Director of Hospice Services Named Finalist for Nursing Award

Cindy Charles, RN, BSN, CHPN director of Hospice Services at the Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center Inpatient Unit at Newark Beth Israel Medical CenterEssex County, NJ -- South Orange resident, Cindy Charles, RN, BSN, CHPN director of Hospice Services at the Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center Inpatient Unit at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System, has been named a finalist in the New York/New Jersey Division of Nursing Spectrum magazine’s Nurse Excellence Program – a national program established to recognize the extraordinary contributions nurses make to their patients, each other, and the profession.  Ms. Charles is one of five finalists in the Management category, who will be recognized at an awards banquet in June where the winners will be announced.

“Everyday Cindy is called to the bedsides of dying patients,” describes nominator Ellen Coughlin, CHPN, MA, MPA, Vice President of Patient and Family Services, Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center.  “She has arranged for a terminally-ill infant to travel to South America to spend Christmas with her family, spent years in Africa delivering nursing care to some of the most impoverished and remote areas of the country and held hands with a young mother dying from AIDS.  She is a true leader who demonstrates compassion and respect for the human spirit in all she does.”

Ms. Charles attended nursing school at Mounds-Midway School of Nursing in Minnesota and earned a bachelor’s of science degree in Nursing from the University of the State of New York at Albany.  She is also a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse.

Established in 1981, the Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center, located at 95 Old Short Hills Road in West Orange, provides comprehensive care for patients with advanced illness, and their families, throughout ten counties in the State of New Jersey.  The Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center supports inpatient units at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, NJ, as well as Van Dyke Hospice at Community Medical Center in Toms River.  It also provides home care and services for individuals in long-term care and assisted living facilities.
