Toms River, NJ -- Lois Thornton and Ann Vallone, of Toms
River, both Secretaries in the Home Health Aide
Department of Van Dyke Hospice and Palliative Care
Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System, were
named Hospice Team Award winners by the New Jersey Hospice and Palliative
Care Organization (NJHPCO). Each year the NJHPCO presents Hospice Team
Awards to recognize outstanding hospice professionals as role models
for their counterparts statewide. Both
Ms. Thornton and Ms. Vallone were named Secretaries
of the Year.

In nominating Ms. Thornton and Ms. Vallone, Kathleen Phillips, LCSW,
Social Service Coordinator for Van Dyke, noted
their willingness to go above and beyond in meeting the needs of patients
and families. “I
often call them for immediate home health aide
placements and urgent patient needs,” explains Ms. Phillips. “Somehow
they find a way to make it work. They seem to be able to pull
miracles out of the air.”
Van Dyke Hospice and Palliative Care Center provides Ocean County residents
who are facing advanced illness medical, spiritual
and emotional support in an individual’s home, hospital, nursing
home or assisted living residence. The Center also offers Ocean County’s
only dedicated inpatient hospice unit located at Community Medical Center
in Toms River. The Center is licensed by the New Jersey Department of
Health and Senior Services, is Joint Commission accredited, a Medicare
and Medicaid certified organization, and is an active member of several
national and state health care organizations.
Founded in 1979, the New Jersey Hospice and Palliative Care Organization
educates professionals and consumers about hospice
and palliative care. Its
membership includes over 90 percent of the state’s licensed hospices,
which together serve over 20,000 patients with
end-stage illness and their families each year.
The Hospice Team and Spirit of Hospice Awards were presented on Thursday
evening, November 12th at the Sheraton Hotel in
Eatontown, NJ during the NJHPCO’s 30th anniversary celebration.
