Preparing For Your Radiology Exam

Lakewood, NJ ----  Radiology tests like Cat Scans and MRIs are critical evaluation tools.  Physicians utilize the results to diagnose complex medical problems, rule out diagnoses and formulate medical action plans.  However, there are several steps you need to take when having a diagnostic imaging exam to ensure that they are able to take the best and most accurate pictures.

According to Mojy Goharie, Director of the Radiology Department at Kimball Medical Center, being prepared ahead of time is very important.  “Knowing what you should wear, what to bring and taking the appropriate steps prior to your appointment can help calm your nerves and save valuable time once you arrive for your test.”

“Generally speaking, we ask all our patients to wear comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes for their procedure, preferably without metallic zippers and/or embroidery,” she explains.  “If you are having an MRI of the head or neck, you must remove all makeup prior to the exam. Also, if you have any type of implant, all information regarding the implant including the date it was implanted, the type of implant, and the report detailing what was implanted must be brought with you on the day of your test or procedure,” says Goharie.

All patients are provided with a locker so that they may lock up and secure any and all valuables brought on the day of the exam.  However, patients should wear a minimal amount of jewelry including watches, earrings and hair pins, as they must all be removed before the tests.  In addition, hearing aids must be removed before a test as well, so those with hearing aids or pieces should bring a container or bag to store them in for placement in the locker.

“We also encourage our patients to bring a favorite CD or music they would like to listen to during their exams,” Goharie said.  “It helps to calm our patients and keep them still during the course of their test.”

Kimball’s Radiology Department has also recently implemented a new Concierge Service for patients.  “Now we have set-up a desk in the Main lobby of the Outpatient Pavilion.  Patients check-in there at desk and can also pick-up and request their films there rather than having to go down to the Radiology Department,” explains Goharie.  “It is much more convenient and our patients love the new process,” she says.

In addition, the Radiology Department offers immediate appointment availability, high resolution images and quick turnaround time, so patients get their results faster.  “Our entire department is dedicated to providing the best images as quickly as possible, so our patients can begin the treatment they need to get better faster,” stated Goharie.

Radiology appointments can be easily made through the convenient Radiology Scheduling Access line which is available to assist patients seven days a week.  In addition, the Radiology Department at has expanded its operating hours and is now offering appointments on Sunday mornings from 8 am to 12 pm.  These new, convenient hours will provide patients with the opportunity to schedule outpatient radiology procedures including CT, Ultrasound and MRI exams at a time and day when it’s more convenient.

Additionally, free convenient parking is also available.
