LAKEWOOD, N.J. (August 1 , 2012) – Kimball Medical Center, a Barnabas Health facility, recently received a grant from the New Jersey Department of Human Services’ Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) for the continued operation of Kimball’s Designated Screening Service program for Ocean County.
As Ocean County’s designated provider of psychiatric screening services, the grant ensures that Kimball’s Psychiatric Emergency Screening Services (PESS) Unit can continue to provide the necessary care to Ocean County residents for the next seven years. The application review process included a comprehensive evaluation and review, as well as recommendations from the Ocean County Mental Health Board, a National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) member, a consumer reviewer and DMHAS staff.
To be considered for the grant, applicants had to demonstrate their experience in successfully providing mental health support, rehabilitation and treatment services to people with serious and persistent mental illness. Kimball demonstrated its ability to meet the evaluation needs for those experiencing a psychiatric crisis through prompt assessment, crisis intervention, evaluation and referral services.
“We’re pleased that the New Jersey Department of Human Services DMHAS awarded Kimball Medical Center with this grant so we can continue to provide much-needed services to Ocean County residents,” said Michael Mimoso, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Office, Kimball Medical Center. “This grant is critical as Kimball’s PESS unit is one of the busiest in the state, seeing more than 8,000 patients each year.”
The grant also recognizes Kimball’s psychiatric emergency services, which offer clinically appropriate alternatives to inpatient care, as well as its 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week accessibility.
