Kimball Medical Center Emergency Department
Selected to Present at International Conference

LAKEWOOD, NJ (JANUARY 4, 2012) – Three members of the Emergency Department team at Kimball Medical Center, a Barnabas Health facility, recently traveled to Orlando, Fla. to present at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s (IHI) 23rd Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care. The forum drew nearly 6,000 health care professionals, including physicians, nurses, and quality coordinators from around the world.

William Dalsey, MD, FACEP, Denise Cimmino, RN, BSN and Marie Paskewich, RN, BSN presented information about Kimball’s success in reducing patient turnaround times in the Emergency Department’s “Fast Track” division to less than 60 minutes using the TeamSTEPPS methodology. The Fast Track division is a dedicated unit within the Emergency Department that focuses on minor medical emergencies.

By utilizing TeamStepps, Kimball Medical Center improved its overall core efficiencies within the Emergency Department and experienced a 10 percent increase in patient satisfaction scores, according to Press Ganey, a nationally recognized firm that specializes in surveying hospital patients’ level of satisfaction.

“We’re thrilled that the Institute for Healthcare Improvement turned to Kimball Medical Center for its expertise in improving patient care and satisfaction by utilizing the TeamSTEPPS methodology,” said Dr. Dalsey. “We’ve seen first-hand how this program promotes efficient, quality healthcare for patients and hope that other healthcare professionals will consider following our lead and implement the TeamSTEPPS approach at their own facilities.”

A collaborative effort from the Department of Defense’s Patient Safety Program and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, TeamSTEPPS provided a framework for Kimball’s emergency department to execute change. Recognizing the opportunity for improvement, the emergency department management team reviewed outcome data, identified barriers that delayed hospital services and implemented specific team-building strategies based on TeamSTEPPS methods to improve the department’s efficiency.
