LONG BRANCH, NJ, SEPTEMBER 28, 2009 – Everyone
knows that a healthy diet and regular exercise are the most important
components to maintaining good heart health. After all, you only
have one heart and keeping it healthy is a life-long process.
But what about patients who suffer a cardiac event and want to
improve or regain their heart health? At Monmouth Medical Center,
the Joel Opatut Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program can help
to do just that.
Sharon Holden, Administrative Director of Cardiopulmonary Services,
said the program offers individualized exercise and educational
programs for participants with cardiac or pulmonary conditions.
Workouts are conducted under the supervision of Registered Nurses
and Respiratory Care Practitioners. The facility features state-of-the-art
fitness equipment and is fully accredited by the American Association
of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
“Through education, exercise and counseling, participants
learn ways to prevent or decrease risk factors for developing
heart disease - steps to a healthier heart and healthier life,” Holden
said.
“Our highly specialized staff works closely with patients
and their physicians in developing exercise programs that meet
individual needs. Workouts are conducted under the supervision
of a Registered Nurse specially trained in coronary care as well
as Respiratory Care Practitioners for our pulmonary patients.
These professionals monitor heart rhythm, rate and blood pressure
to measure the body's response to the exercise,” she said.
Patients utilize a variety of exercise equipment including treadmills,
arm ergometers, rowing machines and stationary bicycles. Individual
and group educational sessions help patients understand how to
embark on a healthier lifestyle. Patients learn about proper
nutrition, weight management, coronary disease, risk factor modification
and stress management.
Monmouth's Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program is open
to individuals who have had heart bypass surgery, valve replacement
surgery, a heart attack, angioplasty, stent or stable angina.
This program also covers pulmonary diagnoses such as, COPD, asthma,
bronchitis, sarcoidosis, asbestosis and multiple other pulmonary
diseases.
If you would like to improve your cardiac or pulmonary health
and feel you are eligible, please contact your doctor about a
referral to the program or call, Monmouth Medical Center’s
Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program, extension 732-923-7454.
