Our services include administering general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, injections for postoperative acute pain, moderate and deep sedation for medical, radiological and oncologic procedures requiring cooperation and a motionless child including spinal tap, catheter insertion, scanning procedures (MRI, CAT scan), GI endoscopies, bronchoscopies and radiation therapy. In addition, we offer consultative services to assess perioperative risk, airway assessment and postoperative pain control.
Before surgery begins, we evaluate the patient for the presence of complex medical problems and assess anesthetic risk. During surgery, the pediatric anesthesiologist’s role is critical. The duties defining the anesthesiologist in the operating room include: continually assessing the anesthetized state of the patient; monitoring and controlling the patient's vital life functions -- heart rate and rhythm, breathing, blood pressure, body temperature and body fluid balance; and controlling the patient's pain and level of unconsciousness to make conditions ideal for a safe and successful surgery. In the recovery room, anesthesiologists will evaluate and monitor patients as they emerge from unconsciousness to begin to control their own functions. With continual support from the nursing and child life staff, the pediatric patient is always monitored for complications and inadequate pain control. The anesthesiologist will decide when your infant or child is safely recovered from the anesthesia to go home.
