LONG BRANCH, NJ - A Monmouth Medical Center physician who leads the hospital’s Department of Medicine is being honored by a statewide nursing organization for his partnership with nursing and shared commitment to quality patient care.
Allan Robert Tunkel, M.D., Ph.D., MACP, chairman of the Department of Medicine at Monmouth, is among 18 physicians who will be honored December 8 with an APPLE Award by the Trenton-based Institute for Nursing — the charitable affiliate of the New Jersey State Nurses Association that provides scholarships, continuing education and research to support and enrich New Jersey’s nurses. The “Acknowledging Physician Partners: A Liaison for Excellence” gala raises funds for education scholarships and research grants for nursing students and nursing scholars in New Jersey.
“This award recognizes those physicians who are supportive of nurses and the patient advocacy that is the foundation of nursing,” says Judy Schmidt, RN, MSN, ONC, CCRN, president of the Institute for Nursing. “These physicians are truly partners who view the doctor-nurse relationship as one of respect, collaboration, and mutual support.”
Dr. Tunkel joined Monmouth Medical Center as chairman of the Department of Medicine in 2006 following a distinguished academic career with the nation’s largest private medical school. Through his nomination, he was lauded for making important contributions to the physician-nurse relationship at Monmouth and was recognized for partnering with the hospital’s Department of Nursing on a host of key initiatives that are truly making a difference in the care of patients.
“Dr. Tunkel is a physician who supports interdisciplinary collaboration and embodies the qualities our nursing staff admires most — professionalism, compassion and sensitivity to meeting patients’ needs,” says Monmouth's chief nursing officer Diann Johnston, who submitted Dr. Tunkel’s nomination. “In fact, it was in recognition of these qualities that the Monmouth Medical Center Nursing Division honored him with their Partner in Care Award, bestowed as a part of the hospital annual Nurses Week Awards Ceremony in recognition of the key role interdisciplinary teamwork plays in allowing us to provide the highest quality care for our patients. And it is these qualities that I believe make him so deserving of the Apple Award.”
Beyond Monmouth Medical Center, Dr. Tunkel is a board member with the not-for-profit organization Goals of Care whose mission is to empower the patient, physician and health care team to make specific treatment decisions that focus on achieving a specific goal that is determined by the patient. He is among five board members who come from diverse backgrounds with strong roots to New Jersey and a deep commitment to improve care for New Jersey seniors.
Dr. Tunkel resides in Ocean Township.
The award presentation will take place at the Institute for Nursing’s APPLE Awards Gala at Hyatt Regency Princeton. To learn more about the event, call Debra Harwell 609-883-5335 x19 or e-mail deb@njsna.org or Tyea Santiago 609-883-5335 x12 or by email at education@njsna.org.
