Long Branch, New Jersey--  Neurosurgeon, Ty Olson, MD and Radiation Oncologist, Sang Sim, MD, Co-Medical Directors of the new Gamma Knife Center at Monmouth Medical Center were joined by physicians, staff and hospital administrators Tuesday evening for the official opening of the new Gamma Knife Center.

The Gamma Knife is a highly developed treatment system which directs multiple beams of gamma radiation, to converge on a targeted abnormality within the brain.  The Gamma Knife has superior precision and enables physicians to treat brain tumors, disorders and cancers with pinpoint accuracy.  Gamma Knife surgery is supported by well-documented research, evaluation and clinical use.

“This technology can treat brain tumors and lesions within .2mm of accuracy, without affecting normal tissue surrounding it,” said Dr. Olson.  “Gamma Knife radiosurgery is an incredible option for many patients who no longer need to travel to New York to have it,” he explains.

“Gamma Knife technology completes the neuroscience puzzle here at Monmouth Medical Center,” stated Dr. Sim.  “Now our patients have access to the full spectrum of care,” he said.

Skylar Steinberg, a freshman student at St. John Vianney High School in Holmdel, presented a check to Monmouth Medical Center officials during the ceremony.  Skylar’s father passed away from brain cancer, so she helped raise money in support of Monmouth’s cancer programs by designing T-shirts and selling them.  Her mother and family members were on hand as she explained her thoughts and reasoning for her fundraising efforts.  “I will never forget all that you did for my family,” said Skylar.  “I wanted to do something to help other families in need,” she explained.  Skylar presented a check in the amount of $1,300 to Sumul Raval, MD, her father’s neuro-oncologist and Frank Vozos, MD, Executive Director of Monmouth Medical Center.
