LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth Medical Center recently graduated six college students from its Medical Laboratory Science program.
Representing the Class of 2012 were Lesley Stephen of Ewing, a graduate of Montclair State University who was honored as the Medical Technology Program’s Outstanding Graduating Student; Tyler Mizglewski of Manalapn, a graduate of Rowan University; Jonathan Rodriguez of Plattsburgh, N.Y., a graduate of the State University of New York (SUNY); Jeremy Mercado of Cinnaminon, a graduate of Monmouth University; Katherine Youngworth of Oak Ridge, a graduate of Monmouth University, and Enala Mwashitete of Tanzania, Africa, a graduate of SUNY.
Founded in 1951 by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Services, the program is certified by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, which surveys hospitals and other institutions in the allied health professions. Its mission is to provide a structured approach to the study of the pathology of various disease states as they relate to laboratory results as well as extensive training in the technical aspects of performing these as extensive training in the technical aspects of performing these analyses.
The year-long program’s curriculum includes clinical chemistry, endocrinology, clinical microbiology, transfusion service, renal physiology and body fluids, immunology, serology, electrophoresis, toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring, molecular methods, clinical hematology, hemostasis, laboratory management, educational methodologies and a 28-week clinical rotation.
Monmouth is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) — placing its laboratory among a select group of 6,000 facilities in the United States to earn this distinction, which is widely recognized as the “gold standard” by agencies such as the Health Care Financing Administration and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
Over the years, Monmouth has established itself as the region's leader in laboratory analysis. A core staff of highly-trained pathologists and more than 100 technologists and technicians work in its fully integrated clinical laboratory where thousands of different diagnostic tests are performed and interpreted — from a standard blood count or urinalysis to the new generation of more complex tests.
