ONGOING/MONTHLY SUPPORT GROUPS FOR YOUNG PARENTS AND TEENS

Teenage birth rates in the United States are high, with more than 10 percent of all births in the nation to mothers under age 20, according to the March of Dimes. High teen birth rates are an important concern because the babies of teenagers face increased risks to their health. The Family Life Education Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center offers several different support groups to address the needs of young parents and teenagers.

Research has shown that stress reduction and promotion of coping skills are benefits of a support group. In addition, support groups act as a source of information and education. The following are groups offered by The Family Life Education Center:

Expectant Mother’s Group for Teens

The program helps participants to: understand the importance of taking care of yourself, understand your child’s development, provide consistent and effective discipline vs. punishment, develop resource systems, and much more. Refreshments will be served.

Dates: Second Monday of each Month

Time: 5:30-7 pm

Young Parents’ Group (for Parents ages 17-22)

FALL Session of the FLEC Young Parents’ Group is being scheduled now. Come and learn more about child development, parenting styles, communication skills, discipline techniques, and managing anger and stress. Handouts, videos, games and guest speakers will be there.

Dates:  Weekly on Mondays for 12 sessions   

Time:  5:30-7 pm

Young Teens Group (Ages 14-16)

Come join a group of teens and share ideas about a variety of topics including: relationships, peer pressure, future goals, Facebook/Myspace/Twitter Status, dealing with stress and much more.

Dates: Every Tuesday

Time: 3:45 pm-5:00 pm
