The Department, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, serves all inpatients, as well as patients who use ancillary services such as the Department of Emergency Medicine, Cardiac Non-Invasive Laboratory, and the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. In addition, the Department's professional staff members prepare standard medication orders and compound sterile products and provide drug information to medical and nursing staff.
A fully-staffed satellite pharmacy, located in the Pediatric Intensive
Care Unit (PICU) supports both the medical and nursing staff throughout
the pediatric unit. The staff is knowledgeable about the latest
medications available for the treatment of infants and children
and the pharmacist, who is trained in pediatrics, understands
the unique metabolism of children and contributes valuable expertise
to the health care team. Having this department within the PICU
allows for the delivery of time sensitive, critical fluids and
medications that are prepared accurately in a sterile environment
and delivered to the patient within minutes of a physician's
request.
