Heller Myotomy

Achalasia is a disorder of the esophagus, the muscular tube that transports food from the mouth to the stomach. If the esophagus contracts abnormally, food cannot enter the stomach effectively and the person experiences difficulty swallowing food and liquids. The Heller myotomy is a procedure used to treat achalasia. The myotomy cuts through the muscle fibers of the lower esophageal sphincter to loosen them. Use of the da Vinci® S Surgical System decreases complications of the traditional surgery, while enhancing patient recovery.
