Newark Beth Israel Provides Students Rare Glimpse of Robotic Surgery in Live

The surgical team at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC) helps high school students, residents and attending physicians to advance their knowledge of Robotic surgery techniques and learn more about this fascinating medical advancement.

Expanding Understanding

NBIMC has helped students of all ages gain greater appreciation for this aspect of the medical field through live telecasts of surgery:

  • In a joint program with Liberty Science Center, NBIMC provided high school science and technology students with a chance to see the future of medical technology in the form of a surgical robot.  The Liberty Science Center’s “Live From…” program gives young people the rare opportunity to watch real time surgical procedures while interacting with the surgical staff.
  • The future is now at NBIMC, where the College of Computing Sciences (CCS) Capstone Open University at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) students have the chance to see live robotic surgery up close and personal. In addition to viewing a live robotic procedure from the OR, students are given the opportunity to “test drive” the robot and tour various departments within the facility. In Anatomic Pathology, for example, the students get to see the specimen removed during the surgery and learn how the departments work together for the patient. Many students leave encouraged after learning the wide range of opportunity in the field of healthcare.  Started in 2002, NJIT Capstone Open University program provides young people with unique real world project-based learning experiences with an emphasis on leadership, interdisciplinary skills and strategic problem solving methods.
  • This summer, students from local middle and high schools, colleges and universities across New Jersey watched live simulcasts of a surgical robotic myomectomy being performed across town at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center by Michael Pitter, M.D., chief of Gynecological Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery. Using videoconferencing technology, they were able to communicate with Dr. Pitter during the procedure in the operating room, and ask questions about the surgery in this ever-expanding area that merges technology and healthcare.
  • NBIMC is one of three institutions in the North East Region participating in the Epicenter Program, sponsored by Intuitive Surgical Inc. Through this program many Gynecologic Robotic Surgeons have an opportunity for standardized quality case observation, proctoring and continuous mentoring experience. Host surgeon, Michael Pitter, MD, also serves as one the GYN Advisory Board Members for Intuitive.
The Robotic surgery program at NBIMC is training the physicians of tomorrow with the most advanced techniques of today.
