The treatment of muscle-invasive bladder cancer or superficially
recurrent bladder cancer requires the removal of the bladder,
lymph nodes, part of the urethra and nearby organs. (In men,
the prostate, seminal vesicles and vas deferens are also
removed. In women, the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes,
cervix and a small part of vagina are removed.) After removing
the bladder, a piece of intestine is reconstructed to allow
for the storage or passage of urine. Parts of these operations
can be performed using the da Vinci® S Surgical
System. The robotic radical cystectomy provides excellent
visualization and control required for the removal of organs
as well as the reconstructive phase of the procedure.
