"Circle of Life" awarded to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center for organ and tissue donation efforts

Springfield, NJ -- Newark Beth Israel Medical Center will receive the 2005 Most Improved Outcome Measures Award from New Jersey Organ and Tissue Sharing Network (NJ Sharing Network) at their 2nd Annual Circle of Life Gala on April 8th at the PNC Bank Arts Center. The hospital is receiving this award for having achieved significant increases in their donor conversion rate-increasing from 33% in 2004 to 64% in 2005. The gala, being held during National Donate Life Month, annually honors various members of the medical community who help to make the process of organ and tissue donation possible.

NJ Sharing Network established the "Circle of Life" awards to honor the dedication of these outstanding medical professionals. Other award categories include: Most Supportive Medical Examiner's office, Most Supportive Funeral Home, Nurse Champion, Physician Champion, Most Effective Donation Advocate, Top Tissue Donor Hospital, Best Donor Management, Highest Conversion Rate, Top Organ Donor Hospital and Top Organ and Tissue Donor Hospital. Selection of honoree was based on data and set criteria collected in 2005.

"We work with donors, donor families and recipients, and the supporting medical community on a daily basis," said Joseph Roth, NJ Sharing Network's president and chief executive officer. "Being in a position to understand the medical and emotional complexities of donation, NJ Sharing Network realizes that it takes special efforts from doctors, nurses and the many others involved throughout the phases of the process to make it as smooth, stress free and successful as it can be," he added.

NJ Sharing Network is the non-profit, federally designated, state-certified recovery agency responsible for providing donated organs and tissue for New Jersey residents in need of transplantation, as well as those on waiting lists nationwide. The organization has full, unconditional accreditation by the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations.
