The public is invited to visit Newark Beth Israel Medical Center on Wednesday, May 27 from 8 am to 4 pm to take a virtual tour in the Artery Explorer, a mobile motion simulator to learn about atherosclerosis, a silent disease that is linked to nearly one in four deaths in the United States.
Presented by AstraZeneca, the interactive experience takes participants on a journey through arteries affected by atherosclerosis, the build-up of plaque within the walls of blood vessels that can lead to heart attack, stroke and other diseases. Along the way participants confront common risk factors for atherosclerosis such a LDL (bad cholesterol), high blood pressure, smoking, lack of exercise, and unhealthy diet. The journey culminates with a sudden collision with a blood clot that demonstrates how atherosclerosis can result in a heart attack or stroke.
According to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, by age 35, two out of three Americans will have some degree of plaque build-up in their arteries. Typically there are no symptoms of atherosclerosis until an artery becomes severely narrowed or completely blocked. At that point the person may suffer a potentially fatal heart attack, stroke or other health problem.
The hospital is home to the Saint Barnabas Heart Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, offering one of the nation’s finest and most comprehensive cardiovascular programs. Among the highly specialized care are the most advanced heart surgery techniques, progressive heart failure treatment, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, state-of-the-art cardiac imaging and one of the nation’s most active heart transplant programs. The advanced techniques are combined with compassionate care and support for the entire family.
