Newark, NJ - Ira L. Salom, MD, Attending Internist in the Department of Medicine at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, recently received the 2009 Reserve Physician of the Year award from the Physician PAC, the physician advisory group to the Surgeon General of the United States.
The award was in recognition of his repeated active duty as a physician in an ‘isolated / hardship’ post – an American Indian reservation in North Dakota, during the winter – and for promoting the Commissioned Corps and its reserve. His last assignment was for the month of November 2008.
“We congratulate Dr. Salom on this well deserved recognition and honor him for providing outstanding healthcare at both Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and to the people of North Dakota,” says John A. Brennan, MD, Executive Director, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
Dr. Salom, a resident of Manhattan, is a medical officer in the United State Public Health Service reserve corps. His rank of Commander is equivalent to Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, Air Force or Marines. The USPHS dates back to 1798 and its Commissioned Corps, one of the lesser known of the seven Uniformed Services of the United States, was founded in 1889.
Dr. Salom says he enjoys his stays in Belcourt, North Dakota, although he misses his family. Among the highlights, he lists the number of bald eagles he has seen.
"Life in North Dakota is very different than Newark,” says Dr. Salom. “The state had a population of 640,000 in 2000 – less than the almost 800,000 people in Essex County. I served the Turtle Mountain band of the Chippewa Nation on the Turtle Mountain reservation, centered about Belcourt, a town of about 2,300. Minot, the nearest ‘big city’ with a population of 34,000 people is 110 miles away.”
