The National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations Foundation, Inc. (NECO) recently recognized John A. Brennan, MD, Executive Director, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey with the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. The award was presented at the Great Hall on Ellis Island as part of NECO’s 25th anniversary celebration earlier this month.
The Ellis Island Medal of Honor is presented to pay tribute to the immigrant experience, as well as achievement medals are awarded to U.S. citizens. According to NECO, “The honorees are remarkable Americans who exemplify outstanding contributions in their personal and professional lives, while continuing to preserve their particular heritage.”
NECO was established in 1986 to honor individuals and groups that represent American’s unique cultural mosaic. The organization continues to support new education initiatives and cutting-edge endeavors, partners with humanitarian organizations nationally and celebrates the diversity, achievements and progress of all ethnic tolerance and cultural awareness. The NECO statement said, “It is from this diversity that the United States is still a beacon of hope for so many, and the greatest democracy the world has ever known.”
“I am honored to receive such a prestigious award in the company of exemplary honorees,” said Dr. Brennan. Prior to becoming E.D. of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey, Dr. Brennan, served as an emergency medicine physician.
As Executive Director at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and the Children’s Hospital of New Jersey, Dr. Brennan is responsible for the daily operations of a 673-bed teaching hospital that provides comprehensive health care services and is a major referral and treatment center for patients throughout New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area and is also home to the Children’s Hospital of New Jersey. Newark Beth Israel is the only Major Teaching Hospital in New Jersey to be named a Thomson 100 Top Hospital Performance Improvement Leader for two years in a row. The August 2010 issue of US News and World Report America’s Best Hospitals ranks Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in the top 50 hospitals nationally for specialty care in Heart and Heart Surgery. The Beth is one of the top rated hospitals in the state based on publicly reported quality indicators and is rated 11 out of 180 hospitals in the New York metropolitan area for quality of care.
