Newark, New Jersey – March 6, 2012 - Newark Beth Israel Medical Center has announced the opening of a new state-of-the-art Digital Mammography Unit, located at the Medical Center on Lyons Avenue in Newark. The new unit is the second unit and part of the new Mammography Suite at the Medical Center – the Unit will help meet the needs of the community in which breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and late stage diagnosis is common.
“The new mammography unit and suite are part of The Center for Breast Health, at The Beth,” said John A. Brennan, MD, MPH, President and Chief Executive Officer of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey. “The new unit allows us to improve the level of diagnostic care to women in the Greater Newark community, in addition to providing increased access and accuracy.”
The new unit offers:
- Lower radiation
- Improves patient comfort (less compression of the breast is required)
- Provides higher contrast images which minimizes false positives and decreases the need for invasive surgical biopsies
- Increases efficiency and doubles capacity.
The new mammography unit is also capable of providing immediate images for procedures and are compatible for a system-wide computer software system that allows radiological studies to be viewed throughout the hospital facility.
Renovation of the Mammography Suite includs new facilities and equipment. The new Suite allows for dedicated changing and seating areas, and registration area, as well as access to an in-suite bathroom.
According to Dr. Brennan, the new unit allows The Beth to offer weekend hours – resulting in an increase in monthly mammograms by 50 percent while decreasing booking delays to an average of one week.
“One of our primary goals at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is to eliminate barriers to medical care. Thank you to the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey for their generous support that allowed us to purchase the new mammogram.” Dr. Brennan added. “The new mammography unit allows us to improve quality and encourages women, particularly in the greater Newark area, to receive care in the community, with the latest technology and service. We believe, the new unit will lessen the incidence of late-stage breast cancer.”
