Newark, NJ—Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC) is pleased to announce a new medical partnership between the NBIMC Division of Neurosurgery and The Neurological Institute of New Jersey, UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. Seven neurosurgeons provide patients at NBIMC with the most advanced neurological care for adults and children that rivals the nation’s leading neurology programs.
“Our Division of Neurosurgery provides patients with world class neurological care and we are pleased to provide such a dedicated, experienced team to meet those needs,” says John A. Using the most advanced imaging technology, the neurosurgeons provide patients with complete and accurate diagnosis. At Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, programs have been developed in neuroscience to diagnose and treat stroke, aneurysms, brain and spine tumors, balance disorders, and chronic back pain. A select team of experienced neuro-anesthesiologists is available 24 hours a day.

- Peter Carmel, MD
Dr. Peter W. Carmel is an internationally prominent pediatric neurosurgeon, and a Professor of Neurological Surgery at the New Jersey Medical School where he served as the founding Chair of the Department for 15 years. He is the founding Co-Medical Director of the Neurological Institute of New Jersey. He is a past President of the American Medical Association and is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery. One of the field’s premier doctors, he has received numerous awards and honors and has been listed in several physician-selected consumer guides for outstanding physicians, including American Health Magazine survey of the "Best Doctors in America," and the book The Best Doctors in America. Receiving an M.D. degree from New York University, Bellevue College of Medicine, New York, Dr. Carmel completed his medical training at the New York University School of Medicine and was a research associate at the National Institutes of Health. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at the Neurological Institute of New York and obtained his doctorate in neuroanatomy from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
- E. Jesus Duffis, MD
Dr. Duffis specializes in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke, endovascular treatment of aneurysms and cerebral arteriovenous malformations, as well peri-operation embolization of head and neck tumors. He is part of the stroke center team at The University Hospital as a board-certified vascular neurologist. He provides medical and endovascular expertise to treat stroke patients. Additionally, Dr. Duffis actively publishes articles in peer-reviewed journals and books including original research. Dr. Duffis received his undergraduate degree from Tufts University before completing his Medical Degree from Meharry Medical College. After his residency at the University of Massachusetts, Dr. Duffis devoted his attention to fellowships in Vascular Neurology and Neurointerventional Surgery at Harvard Medical School at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital and the University of Medicine and Dentistry.
- Chirag Gandhi, MD
Dr. Chirag Gandhi is an expert in both open cerebrovascular surgery as well as minimally invasive endovascular neurosurgery and is one of only a few neurosurgeons in the country that is dual-trained in both specialties. He specializes in the evaluation and treatment of patients with brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), vascular tumors, carotid stenosis, and vascular abnormalities of the spinal cord. His practice offers a range of services including diagnostic angiography as well embolization of aneurysms, AVMs, epistaxis, and tumors of the brain and spinal cord. Dr. Gandhi obtained his medical doctorate from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. He completed both his residency in Neurological Surgery and a fellowship in Endovascular Neurosurgery/Neurointerventional Radiology at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY.
- Ira Goldstein, MD
Through his years of neurosurgery, Dr. Goldstein has achieved a particular expertise in minimally invasive surgery of the spine, endoscopic diskectomy, the treatment of spinal tumors, kyphoplasty, nucleoplasty, arthroplasty, spinal fusion, biomechanics of the spine and stereotactic radiosurgery of the spine. Because of his knowledge in the field, he has been invited to speak at events around the country and he has received top honors from the New York Neurosurgical Society and the Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Goldstein graduated from University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine, underwent residency training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and completed advanced fellowship training in spinal surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
- Robert F. Heary, MD
Dr. Robert Heary is one of the premier physicians in comprehensive spine care providing a full range of conservative and surgical interventions for a wide range of spinal disorders. He is on the editorial boards of Neurosurgery and the Journal of Spinal Disorders and Techniques. He has authored over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles, 100 abstracts, and 35 book chapters. Dr. Heary earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed a residency in Neurological Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School in Newark. Dr. Heary completed a spine fellowship in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- James K. Liu, MD
Dr. Liu is renowned for his treatment of complex brain tumors and skull base lesions, including pituitary tumors, acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, and chordomas. As a fellowship trained skull base and cerebrovascular neurosurgeon, Dr. Liu performs the most innovative surgical techniques, including in minimally invasive endonasal endoscopic surgery, image-guided keyhole microsurgery, and laser-assisted tumor surgery to achieve the best results for his patients. Dr. Liu received his MD from New York Medical College with AOA honors. After completing his residency in Neurological Surgery at the University of Utah, Dr. Liu pursued advanced fellowship training in skull base and cerebrovascular surgery, and neuro-oncology at Oregon Health & Science University.
- Charles J. Prestigiacomo, MD
Dr. Prestigiacomo is renowned for his specialty in cerebrovascular microsurgery (aneurysms, AVM, cavernous malformation, carotid endarterectomy and bypass), endovascular surgery for the treatment of all brain, spinal cord and head/neck pathology (aneurysms, AVM, stroke, tumor, vessel occlusion) and stereotactic radiosurgery for vascular lesions. He spent one year on the Interventional Neuroradiology/Endovascular Service at Columbia-Presbyterian, studying the numerous techniques by which cerebrovascular disease could be treated from within the vessels of the brain and spinal cord. After completing his residency, Dr. Prestigiacomo sought further subspecialized training in Neurointerventional Radiology/Endovascular Surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center.
