About Our Surgeons All of our surgeons are board certified by the American Board of Surgery. They have extensive training in minimally invasive alternatives to traditional surgery, including robotic surgery, which allows them to operate through infinitely smaller incisions, resulting in significantly less pain and scarring, fewer side effects, a shorter hospital stay and recovery period, and quicker return to normal activities.
Dr. Andrei, listed with the Directory of Board Certified Medical Specialists, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. After completing an Advanced Laparoscopic Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in 1999, he started the Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery program at St. Peter’s University Hospital. He also served as Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital until January 2004.
Dr. Vishal Mehta is a vastly experienced Bariatric Surgeon, and the founder of Mehta Bariatric Center, a busy private practice focused on treating all degrees of obesity. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Mehta received his Medical Degree from New York Medical College, and completed a residency in General Surgery at New York Methodist Hospital. In 2002, Dr. Mehta became amongst the first fellowship trained bariatric surgeons in the United States. He has performed more than 4900 surgical and endoscopic procedures, with 1300 bariatric surgeries. His dedication as a laparoscopic bariatric surgeon has gained him a reputation amongst his peers. He is licensed to practice medicine & surgery in NJ, NY, and Florida. Dr. Mehta is one of the few surgeons to perform Single incision Gastric Band through the belly button with virtually no visible scar. He also performs micro-surgery using instruments thinner than 3mm, making this the next evolution of minimally invasive surgery. He has served as the Chief of Bariatric Surgery at Saint Peter's University Hospital, and the Director of Bariatric Surgery at Raritan Bay Medical Center. Dr. Nusbaum, MD, FACS, FASMBS, listed with the Directory of Board Certified Medical Specialists, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Nusbaum performed the first successful Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass at Saint Barnabas. He is a member of the Society of LaparoEndoscopic Surgeons and The Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons among others.
Dr. Paragi is an experienced surgeon who received his medical degree and completed a general surgery residency at the Bangalore Medical College in India. He went on to complete a post-doctoral research fellowship at the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, and was later an appointed Lecturer at the Government Homeopathic Medical College and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Sri Siddhartha Medical College. Dr Paragi also operated a consulting surgical practice in his hometown of Bangalore (India) and in the West Indies for more than a decade. Dr. Paragi immigrated to the United States in 2001 for advanced surgical training. He completed his second research fellowship at the Department of Molecular Cardiology and Integrated Medicine at the renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio, and a third in Minimally-invasive Surgery including Bariatric Surgery at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. In 2005, he joined the Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) following an internship at the Bronx Lebanon Hospital in New York, and completed his General Surgery Residency. Dr. Paragi is currently licensed in the state of New Jersey, and has been appointed as the Director of Minimally-invasive Surgery at SBMC. Dr Paragi has contributed extensively to the surgical literature as well as presented on a variety of surgical topics including weight loss and bariatric surgery at numerous meetings both nationally and internationally. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Association of Surgeons of India, the Bangalore Oncology Group, and the Indian Medical Council.
Dr. Basil Yurcisin is a seasoned bariatric and general surgeon, trained at one of the world's top fellowship programs in bariatrics and minimally invasive surgery- Duke University Medical Center in NC. He received his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield, IL 2003. He completed his residency at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, PA in 2007 and was then named Chief Resident. He completed Fellowships in Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Duke University Medical Center Durham, NC from 2009-2010.
