Child Life Program (973) 322-8350 Four certified Child Life Specialists, under the auspices of Pediatric Nursing Administration, aim to minimize trauma associated with pediatric illness and hospitalization. The clinically trained staff provides developmentally appropriate interventions, as well as emotional and social support to patients and families. Play is the core of the Child Life Program. Through therapeutic play techniques, children are prepared for painful treatments and surgical procedures. The bedside and the playroom are forums for children to freely explore the environment, express ambivalent feelings and establish trusting relationships with all members of the healthcare team. The Child Life staff sees patients on the inpatient Pediatric Unit, the Burn Unit, Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units, the Valerie Center for Children with Cancer and Blood Disorders and and all ambulatory care centers. Referrals may be made for consultative Child Life services at (973) 322-8350. Please call to arrange special child life programs such as school visits and holiday parties.
