Inpatient Tobacco Treatment Program

Since 2001, Saint Barnabas Medical Center has offered its inpatients a Tobacco Treatment Program. Currently, all patients admitted to Saint Barnabas are questioned regarding their tobacco use. A treatment specialist visits those who answer yes to tobacco use to assess the patient's willingness to participate, discuss treatment options and offer educational materials. With the patient's consent, the specialist will contact his/her physician to begin pharmacological protocol where appropriate. Upon discharge, patients are referred to outpatient modalities. For further information, please call 973-322-5767.

Through a grant from the New Jersey Medical Society through the Department of Health and Senior Services, the program was developed and tested by SBMC’s multi-disciplinary Tobacco Intervention Committee. Eventually, the committee provided tested policies, procedures and recommendations designed for easy replication throughout the state's hospitals. Saint Barnabas Medical Center's Tobacco Treatment Program is a model for hospitals nationwide addressing performance measures that assess and treat tobacco dependency.
