The Art Therapy Program at
The Cancer Centers of Saint Barnabas Medical Center

Art therapy helps people use their natural creative ability to express or come to terms with feelings and emotions. The creative process involved in the making of art is both healing and life enhancing. Through the creation of art and discussions about the feelings of the artist, individuals can increase selfawareness, cope with symptoms, diminish stress and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of artistic creativity.

The Art Therapy Program of Saint Barnabas Medical Center includes:

  • Expressive Arts Groups (Ongoing) Within a safe and supportive environment there is an individualized exploration and use of different creative modalities (painting, drawing, writing, movement and clay work). This group offers patients opportunities for addressing and working through specific challenging issues, and strengthening inner resources.

  • Art Workshops (Ongoing) Workshops held throughout the year include painting made easy and collage, tie dye, quilting, sculpture, sewing, and crafts.

  • Individualized Sessions (for patients and/or family members) Sessions are held in the Art Studio, Cancer Center Conference Room, Infusion Rooms and Radiation Oncology on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
