Saint Barnabas Medical Center is First in the State to Use New Cutting Edge Technology for Operating Rooms Livingston, N.J.--Saint Barnabas Medical Center is the first hospital in New Jersey to begin using state-of-the art operating technology in two newly designed operating rooms. The new rooms provide surgeons with the latest modalities for performing a broad range of minimally invasive surgical procedures using advanced laparoscopy, including gastric bypass, laparoscopic living related donor nephrectomy (organ transplant), laparoscopic colon resection, hernia repair, appendectomy and gall bladder removal. "Saint Barnabas is the first New Jersey hospital to make this kind of commitment to minimally invasive surgery," says Dennis Filippone, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the Medical Center. "Our new operating rooms include some of the most sophisticated endoscopic devices in a fully integrated operating environment. For New Jersey residents, this means greater access to breakthrough treatments such as the gastric bypass." The highlight of the new rooms is a sophisticated overhead electronic guidance system including touch-control, flat screen computers and centralized control of overhead mounting systems, lights, tables, endoscopic equipment, and camera and video systems. “Previously, the staff was required to bring a variety of mobile equipment to the operating rooms, which was very labor intensive and required a good deal of space,” says Nancy Slaughter, R.N., Director of Perioperative Services at the Medical Center. “Now, all the endoscopic equipment is built into a system that is suspended from the ceiling. This amazing cordless environment has made the environment safer for the staff and saves time, which benefits patient care. The satisfaction of the surgical team is just phenomenal.” The new technology, called The Karl Storz Endoscopy-America, Inc. OR1™, incorporates the most sophisticated endoscopic devices available. A team of design engineers from Karl Storz worked closely with a group of surgeons and executive management at Saint Barnabas to create and install the new operating rooms. Saint Barnabas selected OR1™ due to its PC-based open architecture, which meets the future needs of surgeons with rapid expansions in system capabilities. Saint Barnabas surgeons may also use the new system to assist with the diagnosis and treatment of patients state and nationwide with the use of advanced capabilities in telemedicine and live telesurgery. The Medical Center has provided tours of its new operating rooms to hospital personnel from the tri-state area who are interested in updating their technology.
