Dr. M. Isabel Roberti Appointed New Director of Pediatric Nephrology and Transplantation at Saint Barnabas Medical Center

M. Isabel Roberti, M.DLivingston, N.J., August, 2003– M. Isabel Roberti, M.D., Ph.D., was recently appointed the new Director of Pediatric Nephrology and Transplantation at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Dr. Roberti has been with the program as its Associate Director since it was established in 1996. At the time, it was the first program of its kind in the state to provide complete renal care to children of all ages. As its new director, she plans to expand services to meet the complex medical needs of children with end stage renal disease.

Dr. Roberti received her medical degree, residency, and pediatric nephrology fellowship at the Escola Paulista de Medicina in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Thereafter, she went on to complete an additional fellowship in pediatric nephrology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. She also completed a Ph.D. in pediatrics at the Hospital Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Dr. Roberti is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric nephrology. She has held numerous academic appointments since 1990 and is currently Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Nephrology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. She is the recipient of numerous honors and scholarships and was an invited lecturer at more than 20 medical conferences and courses. Dr. Roberti has written approximately 45 journal articles, book chapters and abstracts.

Under her leadership and that of Shamkant Mulgaonkar, M.D., Chief of Transplantation for the Saint Barnabas Health Care System, Saint Barnabas has established “medical firsts” in the state, such as transplantation on the smallest baby in New Jersey as well as the first laparoscopic living kidney donation. Approximately 60 children have received kidney transplants at Saint Barnabas since the program’s inception.

Among Dr. Roberti’s plans as the new Director are to offer children with end stage renal disease a dialysis facility specifically for children. “Transplantation is the ideal option for children,” she explains. “However, some children do not have a living donor and must be put on the waiting list. Others may have to delay their living donor transplant and utilize dialysis in the interim. Either way, our goal is to create a dialysis unit specifically for children. Such a facility would meet every need of the pediatric patient. Children’s needs are very different from adults’ in the dialysis setting.” Saint Barnabas currently offers dialysis services both on an inpatient and outpatient basis.

In addition, Dr. Roberti is conducting a research study on hypertension (high blood pressure) in children. Hypertension in children is on the rise and can lead to kidney damage. The goal of the research is to prevent serious, chronic renal failure and to improve the overall health of each child.

Dr. Roberti resides in Summit with her son and daughter.
