Saint Barnabas Medical Center Implements Visitor Restrictions to Help Prevent the Spread of Flu

(Livingston, NJ)- Due to the high number of influenza cases in New Jersey, the Saint Barnabas Health Care System including Saint Barnabas Medical Center is taking steps to protect our patients, their families and staff by temporarily limiting visitation in our hospitals, clinics and doctors’ offices.

The restrictions on visitation include:

No visitors under the age of 18 - No one under the age of 18 is allowed in the facility unless he or she is a patient or he or she is visiting a Hospice or terminally ill patient who is not expected to be discharged from the hospital.

No sick visitors - If a visitor has a fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, the visitor will not be permitted to visit.

These restrictions are in effect at Saint Barnabas Health Care System facilities including Clara Maass Medical Center, Community Medical Center, Kimball Medical Center, Monmouth Medical Center, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health and all Long Term Care Facilities, and Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center and Outpatient Centers.

Individuals who wish to visit their loved ones at Saint Barnabas Medical Center but are prohibited from visiting due to the above restrictions can send them an e-greeting.  E-greetings are available on the Saint Barnabas Medical Center website and will be delivered directly to the patient.  To access the home page, log onto www.barnabashealth.org, choose Saint Barnabas Medical Center under the hospital tab and select e-greeting from the menu on the left. In addition, individuals interested in sending a gift to their loved one can contact The Hospital gift shop by calling 973-322-5239 or by ordering through the website at http://www.sbmcamenities.com/store/pc/home.asp.

Individuals who need to visit the hospital and have questions about these restrictions can call Patient Relations at 973-322-5164.

Steps to Stay Healthy

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.  Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hand often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.  Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.  Germs spread that way.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

If you get sick the Centers for Disease Control recommend that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
