F.M. Jacobs, MD, JD, Retires After Four-Deade Career At Barnabas Health

Dr. Fred M JacobsFred M. Jacobs, M.D., J.D., has announced that he will retire as Executive Vice President and Director of the Barnabas Health Quality Institute as of December 31, 2011, and will serve as a consultant for one year.  Dr. Jacobs has been associated with Saint Barnabas Medical Center and then Saint Barnabas Health Care System since 1969.  He left the System from 2004 to 2008 to serve as Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services where he played a leading role in the passage of the New Jersey Smoke Free Air Act.

Dr. Jacobs has a long and distinguished career as a physician, teacher and administrator. He was President of the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners from 1993-1995.  At Saint Barnabas Medical Center, where he was an attending physician on the Medical Staff for nearly three decades, he also served as Chief of Pulmonary Disease, Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit and President of the Medical Staff.  Subsequently, he was named Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs at Saint Barnabas and then Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs for the Saint Barnabas Health Care System, now Barnabas Health.

Dr. Jacobs has held many faculty positions, including Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) - New Jersey Medical School.   Among the many awards he has received were the UMDNJ’s prestigious Medal for Distinguished Leadership, and the Edward J. Ill Peter W. Rodino Jr. Citizens award in 2009. He has also served as a member of the Board of Trustees at St. George’s University, Grenada, and Professor of Medicine at St. George’s University School of Medicine as well as Chairman of the Department of Medicine.

Dr. Jacobs earned his three degrees at Colgate University, the University of Miami School of Medicine, and Rutgers University School of Law.  He trained in Internal Medicine at Maimonides Medical Center and Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York and completed a Pulmonary research fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center and a Chief Residency in Pulmonary Disease at Kings County Hospital Center in New York.  He is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Legal Medicine and is admitted to the Bars of New Jersey and Florida.
