SAINT BARNABAS HEALTH CARE SYSTEM’S CLINICAL NURSE RESIDENCY PROGRAM GARNERS SUPPORT FROM THE WACHOVIA WELLS FARGO FOUNDATION FOR A PEDIATRIC PATIENT SIMULATOR

The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation has generously donated $30,500 to Saint Barnabas Health Care System (SBHCS) to assist in the purchase of a METI PediaSIM Pediatric Human Patient Simulator, used by nursing residents to practice clinical skills. Through past generous support by the Foundation, SBHCS was able to purchase an Adult Patient Simulator for nursing residents. Now, with the addition of the Pediatric Patient Simulator, the opportunities for nursing education are expanded to include the special needs of children.

“Pediatric medicine is a unique specialty with distinctions in anatomy, drug reactions, types of injuries and underlying physical conditions,” explains Mary Beth Russell, PhD, RN, Director of Nursing Education and Research for Saint Barnabas Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System. “This equipment is vitally important for our nursing residents to have access to practice skills needed to provide appropriate care for children.”

The Pediatric Patient Simulator incorporates a wide range of respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological and pharmacologic capabilities that can simulate any pediatric condition. A complete reproduction of a six-year-old child, the Simulator automatically responds to clinical interventions and drug administrations, providing essential hands-on experience in nursing education.

The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation’s mission is to build strong and vibrant communities, improve the quality of life and make a positive difference where we work and live. “We are pleased to support the purchase of the Pediatric Patient Simulator which we believe will enhance the delivery of health care for children and provide valuable experience in the specialized care that children require,” said Lucia Gibbons, Northern New Jersey regional president for Wachovia, a Wells Fargo Company.

“This generous gift enables our nursing residents to gain practical knowledge in pediatric care,” says Nancy E. Holecek, RN, Senior Vice President for the Saint Barnabas Health Care System. “We are grateful to The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation for supporting our efforts in nursing education.”
